Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
